After fighting in the civil war Jebb was finally able to go west to see the vast unsettled country. He sold his coal rich property in West Virginia and set off on a real adventure. He was planning on stopping when he got to St. Louis but kept on going, deciding to ride his old horse all the way to the Oregon coast.Jebb meets some Sioux Indians and goes on a buffalo hunt with them, getting swept away in a stampede of millions of animals. He eventually comes to a small town, named Black Pine, nestled in a rim-rocked canyon beside a river. Each time Jebb rides from Black Pine something happens to draw him back, where he has mortal problems with a family of cutthroats. Jebb is fast with his Colt .45, but depends more on his sawed-off double barreled ten guage to get him out of most trouble. The gunfights are numerous and Jebb does not always come ouy of them unscathed. When the need arises Jebb doesnt hesitate about using his knife as any hesitation on his part could mean his life.Jebb meets the Jordens, an isolated family living on their ranch boardering the Indian Territory, where he gets a job for the winter. His intentions aer to go to the Oregon coast in the spring but he falls in love with Ann Jorden, the ranchers daughter. Jebbs adventure is just beginning after he meets the Jorden family.
